The Room

The sun was shining bright and its warmth graced Robert’s face, he stood outside the house for a while, taking it all in. He began to approach the front door, the waiting game was over. Robert almost slammed the door behind him as he slid across the marble floor, nearly missing the banister he leapt up the stairs missing two steps at a time. His hands cascaded of the beautiful oak railings, all the way to the top. He gathered himself in front of the door, straightening his tie and running his fingers through his hair. Then he let himself in, his eyes prized over the room, the portraits on the wall seemed to talk to him, welcoming him in. On the desk before him where the letters sent to him from his father, some opened some still sealed, the ones his mother kept hidden from him. His fingers skimmed over the few books left on the bookshelf, some felt rough and roguish others smooth as silk.

His father was a busy man who had a huge amount of wealth, not just from his services to his country but also from the business he had founded from an early age. He felt distanced from his father whom he seldom seen and his mother had suffered over the years from loneliness and her abuse of alcohol. When she drank, it was a good idea not to be in the same room as her because quite often this meant a dark time for Robert. It was not just the verbal abuse but the near misses of physical abuse also. Robert despised his father for not being there for him, blaming him for his mother’s state of mind and health but he was blinded by his love for his mother.

But now, Robert focused on the room he was standing in; the open fire was roaring inviting him closer to the leather chair with its back turned to him.

‘At last,’ Robert mumbled, ‘At last.’

The chair swerved around and the figure sitting on it stood up.

‘Oh Father, I have missed you so much,’ he cried out.

Today was the day Robert did not care; he fell to his knees in front of his father, placing both his hands over his face. The few fond memories that he held of his father from his early years had been trampled on by his mother, leaving no room for love, just hatred. His tears rolled out onto his face, bringing out the hurt and pain that Robert had endured. He wanted to get rid of all the distress that his mind and body has suffered and this was the best way to washing it all away. His father’s embrace lifted Robert from his knees, the weight on Robert’s shoulders had disappeared and Robert felt himself rising up like a glorious star. They stood for a very long time just holding each other like there was no tomorrow. There was a knock on the door and Robert gently moved away from his father.
